In Canada our official registry is the Canine Federation of Canada (CFC). It is equal to, but smaller than, the Canadian Kennel Club (CKC). Both of these clubs must abide by the Animal Pedigree Act from Agriculture Canada. Every purebred puppy born in Canada must be registered.
Only the breeder of the puppies is permitted to register them with the CFC. Once registered, the new owner on the registration and pedigree is permitted to register them with other clubs.
The CFC utilizes the service of a third party in order to issue pedigrees and maintain studbooks. This is done by the Canadian Livestock Records Corporation (CLRC).
Cotons can be registered for show purposes only with the CKC. The CKC issues a "Miscellaneous Number" for them. This allows our breed to compete in CKC Conformation Shows. The CKC does not maintain pedigree information.
The CFC Pedigree may be used to register your dog with Society Canine Centrale (SCC) which is the FCI registry in France. You may also register with the United Kennel Club (UKC) for show purposes. To register with the American Kennel Club (AKC), you can use the CFC pedigree along with the CKC Misc registration or a UKC pedigree/registration.
EVERY purebred Coton puppy born in Canada must be registered with the CFC within 6 months of date of birth. Puppies that are sold as pets, under a spay and neuter contract with the breeder, may be registered as such and the pedigree will state that "offspring may not be registered". Some breeders will not provide the original pedigree to the new owner until they receive proof of spay or neuter.
What Group is the Coton in?
Each club follows their own guidelines on what group the breed belongs to.
CKC - Group 5 - Toys
AKC - Non-Sporting
CFC and FCI - Group 9 - Companion & Toy
UKC - Companion
